The PCSC has seen an increase in interest from club members with cruising style yachts to become more involved in the Club’s on-water events, providing they do not involve the competitive ‘scratch’ racing starts. As a result, the Club’s Cruising Division has introduced an event specifically for
cruising yachts, to be held as part of the Club’s regular annual Port Cygnet Sailing Club Regatta, on Sunday 9 March.
The event will start at the Club’s start line and yachts will sail down the Huon River, rounding Huon Island, up to Brookes Bay then back across the river to finish at the Club’s mark at Beaupre Point. Once the fleet has crossed the Beaupre finish line all yachts will be invited back to the Port Cygnet Sailing Clubhouse for a cold drink an evening meal and the presentation of prizes.
Entrants to the 'Around Huon Island Bash’ will be via the Port Cygnet Sailing Club’s official 2025 Regatta entry form on the Club’s web site. Participants will be required to enter the yacht’s design, current handicap (if available), type of Insurance, how many crew and order food for the Sunday
evening meal. Please note that dinner for Sunday night must be pre-booked and paid for prior to 28 February 2025.
The emphasis of the ‘Bash' is ‘fun’, not serious, competitive racing. This will be a Pursuit style event, with each participant given a handicap based on the yacht’s performance. The slower yachts will start first followed by the faster yachts, intention being that should the Handicappers be accurate
in their assessment, the fleet should reach the finish line at the same time. This method avoids competitive and aggressive starts which does not suit many of the slower reacting, cruising yachts, ensuring that the event is run on a more ‘fun’ and ‘cruising in company’ style afternoon on the water.
The Cruising Division has secured the generous support of Club member Evan Hodge, Director of Integrated Business Technologies Pty Ltd for their donation of $500 to be distributed as prize money for the ‘Bash’. To put this money to good use, it has been decided to award Whitworths vouchers to the value of $250 as 1st prize, $150 for 2nd and $100 for 3rd prize. Every boat owner can surely find a use for a Whitworths voucher!
The PCSC Cruising Division will welcome cruisers from the Tasmanian Cruising Yacht Club, Kettering Yacht Club and all other Clubs that would like to promote the event to their members. Participants in the ‘Bash’ can join the event by taking part in the 2025 PCSC Regatta feeder races from Hobart or Kettering either as a competitor or ‘cruise in company’.
This is the first year the PCSC Cruising Division has conducted an event such as this so we are looking for the support and participation of all Hobart cruising sailors to make this 'Around Huon Island Bash’ a regular on the Port Cygnet Sailing Club calendar.
